Length is the constraint. Anything over eleven characters gets truncated in a scoreboard or a lobby, and the report flags that before you commit to it.

When a blend is the wrong shape
A portmanteau needs both names to have something to give. If one of you has a three letter name, it will either survive whole, which makes the blend lopsided, or vanish, which makes it untraceable. Neither is a failure of the tool; it is a property of short names, and it is documented in the limits report.
The alternatives are perfectly good. Two names joined with an ampersand. Both initials. A name that describes what the two of you do rather than what you are called, which is how a surprising number of duos actually got named.

What is a duo name?
A duo name is a single name for two people, usually made by blending their two names into one word. It is the same operation as a couple name or a fandom ship name, used for a friendship or a partnership rather than a relationship.
How do you make a name for two best friends?
Enter both names above with the friends context selected, then read the coverage figures. If a piece of each name is still visible in the blend, it will work; if one name has almost vanished, try the reverse direction.
Is a duo name the same as a ship name?
Structurally, yes. The difference is intent: a ship name implies a romantic pairing, and fandom has a separate term, BroTP, for a pairing meant as a friendship. Outside fandom nobody makes that distinction and duo name is the plainer word.
What if one of our names is very short?
Short names give up almost nothing to a blend, so the result usually reads as one person's name with something attached. In that case joining the two names plainly, or using both initials, is often the better answer than forcing a portmanteau.
